Lead Based Paint

To help you and your family live in a lead-free environment, the Harris County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention (CLPP) Program offers a plan of action to reduce serious and permanent health problems through the early detection of high blood lead levels and through reducing the prevalence of lead poisoning in children under six years of age.

The program staff provide risk assessments of lead exposure among the children in Harris County's jurisdiction and the adequacy of activities to address the risk, as well as policy development through the development, oversight, and evaluation of necessary programs, relationships, and policies that will support the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention (CLPP) program and assurance through monitoring the provision of its services, including follow-up care and public and professional education, while ensuring, as a provider of last resort, the availability of necessary services.

The program staff:

  • Provides case management to children who have elevated blood lead levels to ensure that the causes of lead in their blood are identified and addressed.

  • Ensures that each child's physician provides follow-up screening to track the changing levels of lead in the blood as the sources are identified and refer for abatement when indicated.

  • Develops and maintain a local database so that lead poisoned cases an be more accurately tracked, evaluated, and monitored.

  • Provides education to physicians, families of children with elevated blood lead levels and others regarding the need for screening/re-screening, the methods of identifying and abating the sources of lead.

  • Conducts the target screening in groups or areas of high risk.

  • Provides public education on the dangers and prevention of lead poisoning.
