Your Path to Harris County's Downpayment Assistance Program (DAP)

In order for you to be considered
for DAP, follow these steps in this order:

  • Obtain your First-Time Homebuyers Education Certificate from one of the HUD approved education providers
     
  • Click here for the list of Harris County approved mortgage lenders that have completed the special DAP program training.  For you to be considered for the DAP program, the lender you select must be on this list
     
  • Decide which companies you would like to meet with.  Although all these mortgage companies are on the Harris County approved list, you must be a consumer who carefully selects the company that you feel most comfortable with.  As part of the interview process, you might want to review their websites and ask them about their rates and their process in obtaining a DAP mortgage
     
  • Ask the mortgage lenders to pre-approve you for a mortgage.  You need to find out if you have the potential to qualify for a loan
     
  • Begin to coordinate the required information, which includes:
     
    1. Drivers licenses
       
    2. Social Security cards for everyone that will be residing in the home
       
    3. Current six months of bank statements
       
    4. Current three years of income tax returns
       
    5. Current three months payroll stubs and any other supportive income information for all adult members in the household, such as child support,
      social security income, etc.
       
    6. Birth certificates on everyone that will be residing in the home
       
    7. Marriage certificates or divorce papers; and
       
    8. Depending on your situation, there could be other information you will need to supply to Harris County, which will be determined before or during the interview with a Harris County loan underwriter
       
  • After the mortgage company pre-approves your application, begin looking for a home in Harris County that does not exceed the maximum sales limits of FHA
    203(b) for Harris County.  Remember only homes in Harris County that are not inside the
    city limits of Houston, Pasadena, Baytown are acceptable for the Harris County Downpayment Assistance Program.  Click here to see a list of zip codes to find out if your dream house is in Harris County
     
  • As soon as all your materials are together and Harris County receives your loan application from the approved mortgage lender, a DAP representative from Harris County's Lending Services will call you for an interview
